Shane Herrmann shaneherrm8b4b — This is one of those books where the writing is so good you don't even notice it. You're just absorbed in the story, which I hesitate to describe because it sounds very "Mom-ish" (as a friend put it). This book makes me walk out onto the street and want to live an extraordinary life, though I can't say exactly why-- I think it's because Ann Patchett comes across as a completely normal, ordinary human being who allows herself to be richly affected by someone else. Keep an eye out for Patchett's keen uses of cultural metaphors to illuminate her friendship (ant/grasshopper, turning on the bedroom light, etc). On a personal note I was recently accepted into a writing program, so that quickly changed my reading of the book. Definitely a good one for writers-- insight into what sort of life you might be getting yourself into.

Ibrahim Hussain ibbe2227b670 — "God exists. And he's an American." Do other things like this exist? The Watchmen is better than most novels I've read. The intertextual stuff comes off without a hitch. This comic book is literature.

Biombö Studio biombostudio — This autobiography follows the life of a man who has made some unfortunate mistakes and finds himself transported to a cell, where he transforms into the O.G. (his nickname in prison, short for Original Gangsta). This is a really good read written by a man who probably never would have realized he had the talent, as he didn't start writing until he was incarcerated, as a way to keep himself sane. My friend Kevin recommended it to me after reading it for a graduate school class, but I would recommend it to anyone as leisure reading.

Stephen Konsor dioramastudios — I was quite astonished when I stumbled upon this book. I didn't realize that soon after basketball was invented it girls' teams played it (although most girls couldn't play in front of an audience). The level at which the Ft. Shaw Indian girls took basketball was awesome. They even beat the reigning champs of Missouri when they displayed their skills at the St. Loius World Fair in 1905. Before this book I really didn't know that girls were allowed to play sports (or that many schools set aside money for a team) until the law in the 1970's which made it mandatory for schools to implement a girls' team for every boys' team.
