Guillermo Aracena guillermoaracena — I really enjoyed it....as someone who does not know much about microbiology I found it quite interesting. The author explained things in an easy way. I found the story of the Lacks family pretty sad....quite fascinating what has become of the HeLa cells. Really eye-opening, makes you wonder what has happened with your tissues after a doctor's exam or hospital stay.

Mew Amazing mewamazing — Geez, Marya. Don't hold back or anything. (She did not.) What a ballsy, courageous book. And, as she touches on, needed. Eating disorders are so often glamorized: they make you thin! Disciplined and tragic and beautiful. It's all too easy to get poetic about it; it is all too easy to look at the public or decorous view of sadness and despair and a young woman slowly, romantically wasting away (La Boheme and all its modern reimaginings come to mind), and be drawn to it. The truth is ugly. It is sick and terrifying and out-of-control and humiliating and shameful and addicting and screwed up and painful and gross. Marya tells it like it is. Mostly memoir, but her story allows her to delve into social and psychological and other issues and interactions of EDs and back it up with extensive research. Occasionally she falls into the poetic trap, but never regarding the day-to-day disgusting and terrifying life of an ED patient, only the mindset or justifications for those behaviors. She is both sympathetic and harsh towards the spiral of an ED. Recommended for anyone with any interest or connection to eating disorders.
