Alejandra Uranga aleu2910fp8c22 — This is the book that Slumdog Millionaire is based on (I haven't seen the movie). It was a last minute airport purchase and it made being stuck in Houston an extra couple of hours pretty enjoyable. The basic idea is that they have a new game show in India similar to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. A kid from the Indian slums makes it on the show and answers all of the questions correctly. They suspect that he somehow cheated. The book is about him telling his lawer what life experiences caused him to know the answer to each question. Unfortunately it is pretty graphic and gritty in certain parts. Bad stuff seems to happen more often in the third world and this book doesn't leave those things out. I would have given it 4 stars if it weren't for a few pretty disturbing parts that could have been left out. It reminds me of the Kite Runner in that way.

Anima Design anima_design_lab — Another great collaboration by David Almond and Dave McKean. I would have given it more stars, but I needed more story. McKean's illustrations are absolutely amazing - they're the best thing about the book. I do prefer their book The Savage to this one. I recommend it often to my students.
