Jc Flyman jcserme — I wish I could give this 4.5 stars. Although it started off bit slow the twist in the Games plot line quickly changed that and I found I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the Hunger Games but I think the sequel is actually better.

Daniel Miranda danieldemiranda — Wise Children. “Hope for the best, expect the worst.” The motto of Grandma Chance, the guardian of the central characters in Angela Carter’s final novel. Written as a memoir by one woman from a pair of twin sisters, this story follows the history of a family of actors over the course of nearly a century. It contains many witty observations on the thespian trade, and the journey to the “wood” is one of the funniest commentaries on the film-making business that I have read in a long time. If you like your old ladies in an Alan Bennett flavour, you’ll enjoy this. At first, the memoirs were a little linear: this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened. I felt like I was reading a memoir written like a seven year old, and was indeed expecting the worst. The story is like a play in three acts. The first act sets some scenes, introduces us to the characters, and raises a few giggles, although the family tree feels a little too complicated to keep up with. The middle act builds up the pace, the life stories start to twist and turn, intertwining in one direction and then casting off in tangents. The last third is read in one fail swoop, the story develops into farce, and the one-liners become sharper and fiercer. By the end, somewhat exhausted, the loose ends are tied up and an encore is performed. The audience gives a standing ovation: yes or no? –ish. Very –ish. Ok, I enjoyed some of the observational humour; Angela Carter had obviously put in considerable effort to honing and fine-tuning the characterisations. But, apart from the comedy value, this book irritated me. I just wanted to leave this family of thesp’s to their own self-induced, self-absorbed demise. I didn’t want to hear anymore about the long-lost Uncle blah-blah, who you just KNOW is going to make a late entry and save the day. Irritated. But perhaps that’s the point? Is this what a satire on familial generations of actors should be like? A tad too lovey; a smidgen too much Ra-de-bloody-da perhaps (the joke is in the story, I promise you). I have to stop now before I start to ad lib. I’ll leave you to make up your own mind about Grandma Chance’s motto. For the laughs: four stars For the story: two stars Overall: three stars (but only because of the fine observational humour)
