The power structure is sexist, and though I know some women melt for a man who dominates, I find it a turn-off. Big time. Possessive can be acceptable sometimes, tempered with rationality, but ownership - not hot.

This book dispelled my notion that writing is an activity reserved for students and scholars of the humanities and the social sciences. Good writing is the result of good thinking and, as William Zinsser shows, anyone from any field can produce good writing. Yes, even mathematicians and scientists can write well. Zinsser explores a variety of fields including anthropology, science, history, art history, mathematics, and provides examples of excellent writing from distinguished researchers and scientists. He comments on why he thinks a particular piece of writing is effective and good. Zinsser goes on to explain that writing is simply the technical side of expressing one’s thoughts. It’s the mechanical aspect of constructing sentences, putting them together in a logical sequence, and constantly rereading and rewriting. It is a laborious process and often frustrating one as well. But, like with any other craft, writing well takes time, effort, and determination. If you want to become a better painter/photographer/builder/etc., then go and paint/photograph/build. If you want to become a better writer, then write.

But it's also a wonderfully deadpan comedy about coming of age in the Tokyo of the early 1970s, and every sentence is a little gnomic marvel that stands on its own. Needless to say, the translation is excellent. R. Murakami would never equal the heights of his debut novel.

Cristina Gonzalez cgonza — A whimsical romance set in the English countryside. I think the NYT review said it best - it's about intelligence, heart, dignity, and backbone. I loved the character development. While reading the book I compared the characters to people I know.
