Heck Yeah heckyeahmissus — 3.5 stars A lot of people say this is an absolute staple of the fantasy genre--that it's a must read, and a book that surpasses a lot of others. I don't really agree with all of that necessarily. I liked it, that's for sure. The writing was excellent, and I have no critical comments to say about the style, prose, etc. However, my main criticism of this book is that it was just plain boring about half the time. I read it in spurts because I would come across an interesting part and then fade into a long series of events which, though they were nicely fit into the storyline, just weren't engaging enough for me. Even the end wasn't quite that interesting, though there was more plot advancement going on compared to the rest of the book. Though I obviously don't condone killing, you would think that a book titled "Assassin's Apprentice" there would be, well...assassinations. This seemed more like the PG version of a book about an assassin, and I found myself wanting/expecting a PG-13 version if that makes any sense. Pretty much the main character is trained to be an assassin, first without knowing exactly what he was doing, and then, when he did understand, the reader doesn't get to witness anything, and all the action goes on behind the scenes in a very anti-climactic way. Also, since the reader can't personally view what the character is going through, it had the unfortunate side effect of damaging my relationship and connection to the character. Overall, the writing was clearly excellent, but since the book wasn't engaging at all for me, I come out with a slightly above average rating.
