A parble for our times, and perhaps a warning to keep a close watch on those who play with peoples lives while insisting they do it all for "The People".

Sanjay Banerjee sunnybombay — I just finished this book today, and I have to say, I was very impressed. I didn't have any extremely high expectations from this book, I figured it'd be a typical high-school clique book, full of teen trivial teen problems and so on. But soon after I started reading I was happily surprised, that it wasn't typical in the least. The book's true nature is very deep, and it deals with many real issues such as racism and social injustice. Yet, when I finished it, the ending left me wanting more, and I vowed to track down the author and forcibly make him write more if this was just a single book, and not a whole series. I am very happy to report that the installment is already out, and I for one intend to buy it as soon as possible. I think you should do the same.

Mikky Koopac koopacmikk20e4 — I read "Pump Six" the eponymous short story as it was reprinted in a science fiction magazine and was immediately hooked by Bacigalupi's wry dystopian assessment of human nature. Many of these stories inhabit the same world and it is often difficult to distinguish whether or not they belong to the same canon. Regardless of their seeming integration with each other, each of these stories reads disturbingly well. Each character is fully realized and developed by the end of the story. While it is absolutely a world of discord Bacigalupi's characters inhabit, there are solid characters and plenty of subtly tragicomic moments to keep the pages turning. I closed the book with an "Amen" as the author's appraisal of the human condition is one I was very much able to identify with.

Trần Khánh gemini_o0o48b2 — Love. So. Much. Love. This book was amazing and creepy and exactly what I needed following a string of lackluster reads. I picked this book up from NetGalley because the synopsis sounded awesome (the cover does nothing for me. Sorry. I really think a new cover would benefit this book.), but I was apprehensive going in. However The Shadowing did not disappoint. I don't want to give too much away because there is a lot of stuff the reader should experience on their own. But I will tell you that it's dark, shocking, and all-around full of awesome. And it's DIFFERENT. For one, it's told from the POV of a teenage boy. It was super refreshing to not only find a male mc, but one that I could connect with and root for. I generally read a lot of adult novels as well as young adult, but I've been on a straight YA kick for some time now, so this has been seriously lacking in my reading. It was sufficiently disturbing and the pacing was excellent. Slater's writing style was good, skin-crawlingly (yeah, I made that word up. So?) good. It was sometimes repetitive, but not enough to distract me from my overall enjoyment of the book. And the plot--again, just so much love. I can't wait for the sequel, Skinned!! I'm going to go ahead and recommend this book to anyone who likes a darker paranormal story. Those looking for a heavily romanticized read with gorgeous/sparkling supernatural creatures should look elsewhere.

Juan Carlos jcreative — This book really probably deserves 4 stars, but since it took place almost entirely on shore and it involves poor Jack getting into yet more financial trouble, I didn't enjoy it as much. I actually set it down part way through because I didn't want to read about the trouble I could see coming. Then a month and a half later I found myself with nothing to read and in boredom picked it back up. I was surprised to find I had already read over half of it. Turns out I'd read the worst of it, and from their on out it got more interesting as well. I prefer the books where they are at sea, though. Especially ones with long, exhilarating chases, or storms, or both.
