Jana Chrzova janachrzova — I will do a video review of the trilogy here at my channel: http://www.youtube.com/magicofbooks In "Catching Fire," the second book in Suzanne Collins "The Hunger Games" trilogy, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are the victors of the 74th Hunger Games, and with that comes comfort, riches, and all the food they can imagine. But both are still haunted by the horrors they witnessed in the arena. Katniss begins to learn of unrest and rebellions in the districts and realizes that she has angered the Capital because of what she did in the concluding moments of the Games. And in a cruel twist of fate, Katniss and Peeta are drawn back into the world of the Hunger Games where their lives are once more put in danger. I see now why "Catching Fire" is a fan favorite. I think it'll be my favorite, too, once I complete the series. I was worried the pacing wouldn't be as quick and interesting as the first book, but it totally exceeded my expectations. Book 2 is an immense thrill ride from start to finish. It does start off a bit slow at first as the reader gets acquainted with Katniss and Peeta's new life, but once they go on the Victory Tour things start to pick up a bit more, and then once you learn the twist to the 75th Hunger Games, things go at a whirlwind pace and it just keeps going. One of the things I loved about this book was the introduction of quite a few new characters (Finnick and Johanna were instant favorites for me) as well as the strengthening of characters we didn't get to know too well back in book 1 (like Gale and Haymitch). As far as characters and writing go, I still enjoyed all of that just as much as I did book 1. But I'm still having issues with the lack of detail and explanation. I think that's Collins weakness with these books: lack of imagery. When things are brought up and first mentioned, you don't get much to go with. And I still have no idea how the Hunger Games function and work. Like I said in my previous review, I would like to know the mechanics of the Games. Overall, book 2 was stunning. I was left with that shock factor at the end of every chapter. I am going to admit right now that I really like a select few reality TV shows. My favorites are "Survivor," "The Amazing Race," and "Dancing with the Stars." And you know what, you can see these three shows heavily in this book. And I'll admit, too, that I love when these shows have the All-Stars editions. I love returning players. So, yes, I am guilty of that. So what I loved about this book in particular was this notion of how obsessed our society is with reality television and are love of celebrity. This book really just made me think of my own love of reality TV and it makes me question if at some point in the future if our world could quickly have it's own version of the Hunger Games.
