Ross White _hiteclouddays — Among Others was rather charming, for me. If anything, it's a love affair with books and reading. It is written in journal format and I was half surprised that I even started the book (I don't like diary/journal format books), and even more surprised that I liked it. The main character, Mori, is interesting. She's solemn, but underneath that is a touch of whimsy that just makes her all the more likable. She reads voraciously and she has already saved the world (to an extent), but not without wounds and not without losing her twin sister. This book is the aftermath of it all. A sort of 'and life goes on'. Usually a book has a grand adventure and a climax and then the heroes are off and living out the rest of their lives. This is directly after that. This is Mori living the rest of her life and it is both an upheaval and seemingly so ordinary at the same time. The way magic is treated in this book is unique. It isn't flashy or loud. The magic could be indistinguishable from events naturally progressing, or it could just be a feeling--and the only way a person knows its magic is if they believe that it is so. A skeptic would have no proof that it is magic and say that it isn't, but the believer just knows. It's rather muted, really, the magic in the book and the way it's spoken about (or even done) just flows through the book naturally. Towards the end it got a little more tangible, like one taking half a step to the side, but it never becomes the stuff you read in other fantasy books, which is somewhat the point. More than anything else the book is character driven. It is less about what Mori does and some grand arching plot and more about how she lives her life, and how she grows into her own person. If you want something fast paced this book is definitely not it. It is slow, but not achingly so--we are walking through Mori's life, not sprinting. What I think I liked best about Mori is how sensible she is. She is both simple and complex at the same time--she loves books, she's unsure about her father and her current station in life, she doesn't precisely like boarding school but it's not like she abhors it, there is a boy but she doesn't lose her head over him. She is open minded, or tries hard to be, and shows it in her thoughts and feelings. It is just lovely to see and to read. Overall, a very solid four stars.

_in28
Yonglin Chong _in28 — "Grief turns out to be a place none of us know until we reach it. We anticipate (we know) that someone close to us could die, but we do not look beyond the few days or weeks that immediately follow such an imagined death. We misconstrue the nature of even those few days or weeks. We might expect if the death is sudden to feel shock. We do not expect this shock to be obliterative, dislocating to both body and mind. We might expect that we will be prostrate, inconsolable, crazy with loss. We do not expect to be literally crazy, cool customers who believe their husband is about to return and need his shoes." Also, I completely choked up when, upon closing the book after reading it straight through, I picked out the highlighted letters in the front title: J, O, H, N.
