никита толстов tolstovgroup — This book was given to me by my nephew. It probably isn't a book that I would normally pick to read, but I am glad I did. The authors style of writing was very descriptive and each scene that was described was easy to imagine. However it was difficult to follow along at times when the author would jump back and forth from the present time and the past. Sometimes I was unsure which time period the character was in. I wish the ending would have been more "tidied up" and resolved some relationship issues as there was a lot left unsaid. But, the story was intriguing and left me wanting to keep reading. My favorite passage was this..." I want to use the time it takes. Time is important to me now, I tell myself. Not that it should pass quickly or slowly, but be only time, be something I live inside and fill with physical things and activities that I can divide it up by, so that it grows distinct to me and does not vanish when I am not looking."

Hially Darlling hiallydarlling — What seems like decades ago, before I got realistic about having a feasible career in something I was competent, my formative intellectual development happened at UCLA. Of course, "decades" is only about 8 years ago, and the memories are starting to fade into a sepia pastiche of fuzzy edged recollection. I did not have a car during my undergrad years at UCLA (not even a license, actually). My daily commute in my last year involved a long walk from the campus, down Westwood Ave. and to Wilshire, where I caught the first Red Line out to Miracle Mile. It was a time of discontent and disorganization in my professional pursuits, but an annus mirabilis for me nonetheless - from a personal, humanistic level, I think I developed the most from those months. One of my memories was passing by the UCLA Semel Institute, which occupied a prime spot next to the new research center and across the street from the hospital. Dr. Gary Small was and is the head of the Institute, and does incredible work with human behavior and motivations from a psychiatric viewpoint. He has a few scholarly works to his credit but he is well known for his popular works as well. His latest includes some wry commentary, scientific education for the layman, and even some philosophy of the mind. The book starts out with Dr. Small's memoirs of his early days in his medical internship and psychiatric residency. He developed into a great psychiatric researcher in Los Angeles (where he still remains). Pretty quickly, however, the topic turns to the weird cases he has seen over the years. They are largely presented in chronological format but the stories are pretty memorable: a hypoglycemic who was mistaken for a schizophrenic, or the various housewives with neuroses that show up in his office. The tales are not focused on drug therapy all the time; incidentally, that is preetty much *all* that psychiatrists do nowadays, and they leave the talk therapy for the therapists. Most of his anecdotes focus on the patient first, then the countertransference that the psychiatrist inevitably experiences as well. It is a good mix and an intriguing read, but not exactly completely absorbing. The lack of pure science behind psychiatry sometimes gets me down on the specialty. Dr. Small has his moments of introspection, though: "We spend years of our lives in school and college studying any number of topics, yet the idea of taking a few hours to study ourselves seems foreign to many." Clearly there is much more to be done and there is a long way to go.

Rogerio Balieiro rogeriobal03b9 — This was a really nice book. I liked the characters. I wanted to read more all the time. I love a book that will engage me like this, but it lost a star in my rating because I was disappointed in the ending...somehow it was just lame. But still a good book!
