Amaia Moran amaiamoran — Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is an odd combination of age appropriateness. The short length, coherent chapter arcs that exist as short stories in their own right, and simple plot are perfect for younger children. Fleming does a good deal of stage whispering that is also something more common in younger children's narratives. Yet he introduces several elements of "mortal danger!!" that small children may find frightening, especially in the final chapters, that reads like a simple Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys mystery. The car itself is whimsical and just as important a character as any of the people. The family Pott are themselves a good deal of fun, and I think children will enjoy the level of trust that the parents give to their kids. Also quite interesting are the jabs at VW Beetle-like cars and how uninteresting they are, how a car salesman gives away cigarettes to potential customers to entice them to buy, and the "slice of life" in England between the world wars. I haven't seen the film, but I confess I was expecting a bit more from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The fantastical elements of the car lend themselves to a wide variety of possible adventures, but Fleming chooses to just dip his toe in the pool.
