Mert Reisoglu mertreisoglu — ** spoiler alert ** My rating: 5 stars Summary: Other Words For Love is about a girl growing up in New York City during the mid to late 1980s. The girl's name is Ariadne, but she’s called Ari. She’s a smart, sensitive girl who is good at art and drawing, but who lacks self-esteem. This lack of confidence stems from numerous factors: her sister was popular and beautiful, but wound up pregnant and married to a stud, a blonde fireman from Boston named Patrick. Ari lusts for Patrick and wishes she had a guy like him. Evelyn never hesitates to shove Ari’s inadequacies in her face and makes a lot of nasty comments to her, but this comes from Evelyn’s own low self-worth. Evelyn knows that her parents are disappointed in her and look to good-girl Ari as their only hope of a successful daughter. Ari also has to deal with her best friend, Summer, who is another popular and beautiful girl who covets Ari’s friendship and doesn’t want her to have other companions. Ari also has to cope with her mother, who “means well” but pushes Ari to the limit. It’s just study, study, study, and forget about boys. But Ari is a normal girl, and she wants a boyfriend. When she finally gets one, she can hardly believe it’s Blake Ellis, who is just as hot as Patrick but also rich, a hard-working college student, and the scion of a successful law firm. Blake’s father looks down on Ari’s middle-class home and doesn’t want Blake hung up on a girl who might “ruin” his plans for Blake. When Blake bows to pressure, he destroys his relationship with Ari, and almost succeeds in destroying her, too. Story: Not the run of the mill YA love story. This one is very mature (it involves sex, drinking, teen motherhood, emotional problems, and other issues) and it deals with many other factors in Ari’s life other than just her romance with Blake. I admire the development of the background story and the events leading up to what ultimately happens between Ari and Blake. Getting to know Ari so well before she met Blake set the stage for her reaction to being with him and being without him. The story covers four years, which is great since it shows Ari's growth over time from ages 16 through 19. Characters: Brilliant! The characters are all crisp, lively, and human. Not only is Ari well-developed, but so are all the supporting characters. Writing: Also brilliant. The author has some lovely passages, but she always gets to the point and moves the story along. The dialogue is especially realistic. The author is able to get across exactly what is going on in Ari’s mind, both positive and negative. The emotions expressed are palpable. Title: I have seen some discussion about what the title means. My opinion is that it has to do with Summer questioning whether Ari’s love for Blake was “real” or a “crush” It also seems to relate to Ari’s love for other characters—for example, Patrick. At first she lusts for him, and then she sees him as a family member she loves in a platonic way. Cover: Very beautiful and reminiscent of the story. Recommendation: Highly recommended.
